Peter Wells

Born in Nottingham, Wells’ professional career started with local side Nottingham Forest, where he racked up twenty-seven Football League appearances before a move to Southampton mid-way through the 1976-77 season. He remained with the Saints until February 1983 when Wells headed for Millwall. In the summer of 1975, having made just thirty-three appearances for the London side, Wells opted to make the short journey to Brisbane Road. He would miss just two of the O’s fifty-nine competitive fixtures in his debut season, as Frank Clark’s men finished a promising fifth in the fourth tier. Wells remained a regular in the side over the following two campaigns, as further respectable League finishes of seventh and eighth were obtained. Things looked set to continue well for the ‘keeper, with him ever-present during the opening stages of the 1988-89 season. However, during a training session, Wells broke a bone in his ankle and was unable to play. His final game prior to injury was a 1-1 draw at home to Reading in the Sherpa Van Trophy on 6th December. Twenty year old Paul Heald duly stepped up as Wells’ replacement and helped the side to promotion via the play-offs. Meanwhile, Wells - soon to celebrate his thirty-third birthday - planned a move away from East London and left for non-league Fisher Athletic that summer. During his time at the O’s, he made one hundred and eighty six appearances.
